When discussing China-Gulf relations, energy trade often first comes to mind. Yet the growing economic engagements between China and the Persian/Arabia Gulf countries in the twenty-first century go far beyond oil and natural gas. The speakers will delve into the various aspects of the economic cooperation between these two important regions of economic growth, assessing their past experience, current situation, and potential challenges in the future.

Shuang Wen - Moderator
Visiting Assistant Professor of History, NYU Shanghai
Shuang Wen (or 温爽 in Chinese) is a historian of modern China and the Arab world. Prior to joining NYU Shanghai as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History, Shuang held fellowships at the National University of Singapore and New York University Abu Dhabi. She received a PhD in Transregional History (modern Middle East and East Asia) from Georgetown University and an MA in Middle East Studies from the American University in Cairo. As a native Mandarin speaker, she received additional intensive Arabic-language training from the University of Damascus and Middlebury College. Her research has been featured by the American Historical Association in “Member Spotlight.” Her forthcoming first monograph investigates the transformative processes of Arab-Chinese entanglements in the age of global empires from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of World War II. Before switching her career to academia, Shuang was a broadcast journalist for Phoenix Satellite Television InfoNews Channel in Hong Kong (香港鳳凰衛視資訊台, 2003–2006), covering major breaking news events from the Middle East, and English-Mandarin-Cantonese Simultaneous Interpreter for LIVE news coverage.

CEO, Mesa Nova Technology LTD
Mesa Nova is an Internet company that mainly does social platforms and focuses on the Mena area. Viky has served as head of Tencent International Product, Responsible for the distribution of pubg and other products in emerging countries. She was the global product leader of Tencent WeChat Pay. WeChat Pay is China’s largest payment platform. From 2012-2014, Viky was the product manager of Qzone, which was the biggest social platform at that time in China. From 2014 to 2017, she served as the senior product manager of WeChat Pay, responsible for large-scale domestic strategic cooperation. In 2018, she was responsible for Tencent's global business , including pubg landing in the Middle East and other businesses.
Daniel Cederberg
Daniel Cederberg is the U.S. State Department’s first Regional China Officer for the Middle East and North Africa based in Abu Dhabi, UAE.  In this role, he advises Washington D.C., regional embassies, and U.S. partners on how to understand Chinese activities in the region.  He has previously served in Doha, Qatar; Guadalajara, Mexico; and Guangzhou, China.  Prior to joining the State Department, he worked as a Senior Analyst at the Advisory Board Company in Washington, D.C.  Daniel holds degrees in Economics, History, and East Asian Studies from Penn State University.  He speaks Mandarin, Spanish, and Arabic.
Professor Jonathan Fulton
Jonathan Fulton is an Assistant Professor of Political Science in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Zayed University, in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and a senior nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council.  His research focuses on China - Middle East relations, international relations of the Gulf, Chinese foreign policy, and Asia – Middle East relations.  He has written widely for both academic and popular publications.  His books include China’s Relations with the Gulf Monarchies, External Power and the Gulf Monarchies, Regions in the Belt and Road Initiative, and the Routledge Handbook of China-Middle East Relations.
