第69期：On the Dot
这天小小常想去看电影，所以就早早地写完了作业，跑过来向常爸汇报。
小小常
Daddy, I've done with my homework today. Can we go to the cinema now?（爸爸，我今天的作业写完了。我们现在能去电影院了吗？）
常爸
Sure! Well done. Do you want to eat dinner first?（当然！你做得不错！你想先吃晚饭吗？）
小小常
Okay! When do we set off?（好呀！我们什么时候出发？）
常爸
The movie starts at 8:00. If we want to arrive there on the dot, we should set off for dinner now.（电影在8点开始。如果想要“on the dot”到达电影院，我们现在就得动身去吃饭。）
小小常
Arrive on the dot? What dot?（到达on the dot？什么dot呢？）
常爸
It means arriving on time.（意思是准时到达。）
小小常
Okay, I see. Daddy! Let's go!（好的，我懂了。爸爸！我们出发吧！）
dot可以表示点、圆点。在这个短语中，dot是出现在手表或时钟表面上的标记，表示对应的时间。
on the dot表示准时、准点，从18世纪早期出现的短语“to the dot”（确切地）演变而来。它的用法与on time类似，可以形容一个人守时。例如：
He arrived at nine on the dot. I thought he'd be late.
他9点整准时到了。我本以为他会迟到。
As far as I remember, James has never been on the dot for any gathering.
在我印象中，詹姆斯参加聚会从没准时过。
on the dot也可以用来形容交通工具，例如：
The train arrived on the dot of three o'clock.
那辆火车三点钟准时到达。
The taxi showed up on the dot.
出租车准时到了。
on the dot还可以用来形容天气，例如：
Weather forecasters said it would rain around noon and, hey presto, the first drops of rain started to fall almost on the dot.
天气预报说中午左右会下雨，嘿突然就像变戏法似的，第一滴雨落下的时间几乎分毫不差。
除了on the dot和on time, 我们再来看几个其他与on搭配表示“准时”的短语吧：
✍on schedule 按时，按照约定时间
schedule表示时间表、计划，on schedule表示恰好在时间表规定的时间，美国人比较喜欢用。
The alarm clock woke him up on schedule.
闹钟准时将他闹醒。
✍on the tick 极为准时地
tick是钟行走时的嘀嗒声，on the tick表示非常准时，常见于英式口语中。
The guests arrived at eight on the tick.
客人们八点钟准时到。
✍on the stroke 准时地
stroke由报时钟声引申为时刻的意思，表示准时。
He was here on the stroke.
他准时来到这里。
✍on the button 准确；确切
当on the button和时间搭配时可以表示准时。
We arrived at 4 o'clock on the button.
我们在4点钟准时到达。
