很多小朋友估计都知道“公鸡”和“母鸡”的英文是有区别的，“公鸡”是rooster；“母鸡”是hen。
除了单词的不同，公鸡打鸣和母鸡叫所用到的动词也不一样：公鸡打鸣要用crow，而母鸡叫则用cluck。
先来看两个例句：
I heard a rooster crow.（我听见雄鸡啼叫。）
The hen clucked at her chicks.（母鸡朝她的小鸡们咯咯叫。）
小公鸡，喔喔叫，太阳公公起得早。
在童话世界中，喔喔叫的小公鸡有一项非常重要的工作，那就是叫太阳公公起床。听到小公鸡的叫声，太阳公公就露出头顶，慢慢升起来。
如果有一天，小公鸡起晚了，那会发生什么事情呢？
今天我们就来读一读这本有趣的英文电子书《The Day The Rooster Slept Late》（贪睡的小公鸡）。
看，封面图片上的小公鸡神气十足，还戴上了漂亮的领结。它要去做什么呢？它又为什么会起晚了呢？
Rob the rooster got up early.
He fixed his feathers.
He was going to a dance!
小公鸡罗伯早早起床。
他梳理了自己的羽毛。
他要去跳舞！
Rob did not know how to dance.
The hens showed him how to dance.
罗伯不会跳舞。
母鸡们教他跳舞。
The hens and Rob danced and danced.
Then they looked at the clock.
“Oh, no!” they said. “ It's very late!”
母鸡们和罗伯跳啊跳啊。
后来他们看了一眼时钟。
“噢，不！”他们叫起来，“时间太晚了！”
The hens went home.
Rob's feet hurt.
He danced too much!
母鸡们回家了。
罗伯的脚很疼。
他跳舞跳得太久了！
Rob was tired at night.
He slept and he slept.
The next day, the sun did not rise.
The sun slept and slept.
夜里，罗伯感到很疲惫。
他呼呼大睡，睡得很沉。
太阳没有升起来。
太阳也在呼呼大睡。
The sun was still asleep.
So the hens did not rise.
They slept and slept.
太阳还在沉睡。
于是母鸡们也没有起床。
她们也在呼呼大睡。
Finally Rob woke up.
He looked at the clock.
“Oh, no!” he said. “It's very late!”
Rob saw the sleeping sun.
He sang to the sun.
最后，罗伯醒了。
他看了一眼钟表。
“噢，不！”他叫起来，“时间太晚了！”
罗伯看到还在睡觉的太阳。
他对着太阳高歌起来。
The sun rose.
The hens woke up and went to see Rob.
They gave him a present.
It was an alarm clock!
太阳升起来了。
母鸡们起床，来看罗伯。
她们送给罗伯一个礼物。
是一个闹钟！
原来，小公鸡Rob之所以起晚了，是因为前一天晚上和母鸡们跳舞跳得太累啦！
不管是公鸡rooster，还是母鸡hen，它们都可以统一称为chicken。
除了可以表示“鸡”，chicken还有“鸡肉”的意思。比如油汪汪的烤鸡，就是roast chicken；香喷喷的炸鸡，就是fried chicken。
此外，在口语中，chicken有时也用来表示“胆小鬼”。
比如：It's just a spider, you chicken! 就是个蜘蛛而已，你这个胆小鬼！
英文中还有许多和chicken有关的常用表达，这些表达有的形象生动，有的妙趣横生，用在日常对话中可以让你的口语听起来非常地道。例如：
✍Run round like a headless chicken 忙得像无头苍蝇，手忙脚乱
Instead of running round like a headless chicken, make a list of the things you need to finish and then work on them in that order.
与其像无头苍蝇一样瞎忙，不如把你要做的事情列一个表，按照顺序去解决。
✍Don't count your chickens （before they're hatched）. 不要高兴得太早。
You'll probably get the job, but don't count your chickens just yet.

你很可能会得到那份工作，但现在高兴有点为时过早。
