In/Situ 5-25 JUN 2020

This exhibition is focused on the question of building culture. It documents a series of design build and research projects led by Donn Holohan, Assistant Professor of Architecture at HKU, which have sought to find answers to the many challenges facing our cities and landscapes, not through a top down executive order but though new forms of relational materialism.

Exigent Habitats 3 JUL – 2 AUG 2020

arch.hku.hk/event_/exigent-habitats/
The Unit is part of the visiting professors program of the Master of Architecture Year 1 Spring Semester 2020, led by Rok Oman, Špela Videcnik, and Jose Navarrete. Its research focuses on key global concerns such as environmental issues, climate change, increasing social and economic inequalities, mass tourism, waste management and growing population by exploring the limits of habitation in severe environments. These habitats represent a unique testing territory for human settlements because of its inherent climatic singularity. Understanding the performance of architectural proposals in these areas is essential to anticipate what might become standard in the rest of the planet for years to come. The research through design proposes schemes for specific sites while addressing issues such as the latest technological breakthroughs, vernacular tradition and local identity. The aim is to produce a coherent concept to cope with the exposed facts for each scenario.

A Matter of Gravity 5-26 OCT 2020

arch.hku.hk/event_/a-matter-of-gravity-exhibition-pmq/
This exhibition concentrates on a singular project, a concrete house named Casa Trevo or Trefoil House, recently completed near Lisbon, Portugal. The house study is part of a broader practice-research work on prototyping with concrete, led by Olivier Ottevaere, Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Hong Kong. Documented is a four-year journey, before, during and after the project’s construction, where ideas of space, geometry, structure, materiality and scale are tested in the making of an architecture in constant dialogue with its environment.

Quarantine Drawings 2-16 NOV 2020

How can we think of an architecture of proximity – to mix ways of living together – which in times of pandemic becomes a threat to the domestic? To draw this phenomenon is not just to illustrate or repeat it. Rather, to draw as a form of (re)search is to assess architecture with measure and specificity through multiple scales. Doing so may guide us to connect the extraordinary circumstances of our ‘now’ with a fundamental condition of our collective experience.

The nature of this collective experience refuses abstraction and generalisation, but rather, demands attention. To abstract makes us forget not only the body, but the body situated in space, the individualised body caught up in tangible relationships that are not interchangeable, and not relativizable in the last instance. To draw attentively does not reduce the individual to a theoretical construct. To draw attentively is to measure specificities and engage with the concrete problems that a person faces as an individual living in a community of others.
