My name is Sean.  I am 12 years old and a middle school student.  As a young person, in this turbulent time, I started to learn issues on social justice and law & order.  A few months ago, George Floyd was violently murdered with brutal force of a policeman.  The brutality of it shock the conscious of all in this country.  Reading information available on the Internet, I learned that social injustice in this country still exists and the death of George Floyd demonstrated that.  The society is unanimous that the policemen involved in George Floyd’s death must be punished and they were quickly arrested. In response to this tragedy, large crowds gathered in different cities to protest in the midst of the pandemic.
Many protests quickly turned into violence.  Videos emerged showing extremely violent acts with windows smashed, buildings burned down / destroyed, stores looted, fires set everywhere, properties of innocent robbed.  In some cities, historic statutes in the public were taken down, government buildings were burned down, churches were destructed, streets occupied, neighborhoods terrorized, non-government zones declared, chaos everywhere.  Worst of all, the violent groups senselessly killed many innocent:  babies, toddlers, young and old, as well as police men and women, of different colors.  These violent acts became completely unjustified, utterly criminal, also shocking the conscious of most.
However, government bodies in some cities seemed to turn a blind eye to the violence and allow it to continue and spread.  Why does anyone allow violent groups to kill, to destroy, to terrorize, and to harass those who have nothing to do with the death of George Floyd?  Where is the sense of it?  Some say it is the freedom of looters to express.  But that is wrong.  The First Amendment of the Constitution guarantees the freedom of speech in a peaceful manner.  But how can now violence be allowed to be an answer to the violence done to George Floyd?
Even more so, in the midst of all that, all over the country, police was demonized and the violent groups were attacking and killing police men and women.  There were calls all over for defunding the police, some from protesters, looters, some even from government officials and politicians.  How can a government official or politician call to defund the police when they are most needed for protecting people?   Shouldn’t an elected politician act to protect the innocent people?  Doesn’t defunding the police put innocent people even in a higher level of danger in the hands of violent looters and rioters?  Faced with the escalated violence, people need police more than ever to enforce law and order.  Calling for defunding police makes no sense at all.
Those who are responsible for George Floyd’s death do not represent the super majority police men and women who serve responsibly our communities everywhere in the country.  The politicians who called for defunding the police know that.  They also know that the police force is necessary to maintain law and order and protects our communities.  Those men and women risk their lives each and every day for the people.  The presence of the ongoing violence in the wake of George Floyd’s death makes the presence of police even more important.  However, these politicians nevertheless called for and some did defunding the police. Why do some politicians put their politics above the safety of the people?
I also learned that some cities have actually reduced the funding to the police (e.g. NYC reduced $1 billion funding to NYPD) and fired many police men and women.  This is to punish these men and women who did nothing wrong. Isn’t this the perfect injustice done to these innocent police men and women?
As a young person, we learned in school that America is a country of law and order and citizens are to obey the laws and police is in the center of maintaining the law and order.  When these politicians defund the police, does that push this country into more chaos and allow more innocent people to be harmed/killed?
Although I am young, I can even see that killing/violence is not a solution to social injustice.  But why some of our politicians don’t have that common sense?
With those questions, I looked for and studied information from different sources.  Things happened in the last few months just do not make sense.  Today, killings, destructions, and threats continue to terrorize many.  As a young person, I have common sense which I believe that adults also have or should have.  Based on my research and analysis of what happened, I believe that:
  1. Violence is not an answer to social injustice.  Law should be used to punish those who are responsible.
  2. Violence is itself social injustice because it unjustly harms innocent people.
  3. Few bad policemen do not characterize the police in general.
  4. We want law & order.  We support our police who risk their lives everyday for our communities.
  5. We need a President & politicians who are strong in social justice and law & order.
