On May 12th, the Illinois chapter of the United Chinese Americans (UCA) hosted a mental health, anxiety, and bullying discussion regarding Asian Americans during the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting quarantine. Over 200  people were in attendance for the live online video, and hundreds more are expected to view the recording of the event. After an overview of  the situation that Asian Americans have to face in public, followed by advice on how to cope with deteriorating mental health during quarantine, the focus of the event turned to a panel discussion featuring 6 young adults, who shared their perspectives on how they felt about the pandemic. As a panel speaker myself, I think that the event was an eye-opening experience because I was able to not only share my own perspectives but also learn about  the thoughts of my fellow youth panelists. For example, for one of the discussion prompts, everyone viewed a video of an Asian American woman being verbally assaulted and abused in a public area due to her race and the negative stigma surrounding it that has arisen during the pandemic. Many panelists suggested that the best course of action would be to confront the person causing the problems, record video, file a civil suit, and try to change their way of thinking. Although this is a valid course of action, I believed that it would be pointless to try and argue with this kind of person. Rather than infuriating yourself by attempting to change someone’s viewpoint (which is likely not going to change), I suggested avoiding confrontation and working with organizations such as UCA to find a systemic solution to the internal prejudice in society. It is eye-opening to see such different approaches to solving the same problem, and only in a forum such as this one where like-minded community workers gather can we see such diverse and progressive thinking.
All in all, as a student, a citizen, and a member of the Asian American community, I found this UCA panel discussion and accompanying event to be a great resource to the community. I would highly recommend other youth and parents to view the footage and to attend future events. Stay safe during the pandemic, and look forward to a better time!
