位于伦敦滑铁卢车站,一辆火车缓缓驶出,但火车里头坐着的不是活人,而是一具具尸体!

这辆火车将驶向萨里,终点站是一座公墓,据说每年运输的尸体可达2千具。
19世纪中叶,霍乱袭击了全欧洲。当时医疗背景落后,死亡率急速上升,在英国夺去13万条生命。
每天从伦敦病院推出大批死于霍乱的尸体,使得城内的墓地不堪负荷,墓地价格直线狂飙,造成穷困家庭已到“死不起”的地步。
伦敦政府为解决无从埋葬的情况,只好另外在伦敦的西南区布鲁克伍德开辟新的公墓,占地达1500公顷,成为当时全世界最大的墓地。
但是如何将这些尸体从伦敦送往96公里之外的公墓呢?当时伦敦最盛行的交通方式还是马车,但路途遥远,光靠马车不可能达成,伦敦政府最终成立这辆“尸体列车”。
大批的尸体会先存放在车站附近的隧道中,“尸体列车”将尸体安置于列车后,一路驶向终点布鲁克伍德公墓。
从起点至终点,全程约为40分钟,中间不停靠,伦敦政府特别让列车经过一段优美宁静的景色,陪伴逝者走过一段美丽且安逸的旅程。
有人说这是英国最恐怖的路线,但也有人说,既然它被选为陪伴逝者的最后一条路,也许是英国最美好的路线。
