(28 May 2020,Shanghai) Hurun Education, the education platform of Hurun Report Inc., todayreleased the Hurun Education Top International Schools in China 2020, aranking of the Top 100 international schools in China. This is the third yearof the ranking.
This report alsoincludes, for the second year, the Hurun TopInternational Schools in Hong Kong and Macao 2020, a ranking of the Top 10international schools there.
As in previousyears, the Hurun Education Top International Schools in China isbased on a peer to peer review. Between December 2019 and March 2020, HurunEducation surveyed 282 international education experts in China. HurunEducation asked them, in an unprompted question, to recommend up to fiveschools from each of ‘Greater Shanghai’ (Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang),‘Greater Beijing’ (Beijing and Tianjin), Guangdong and ‘Rest of China’ thatprovided – in their opinion – a good all-round education. Hurun Educationreceived 2188 votes in total, an average of 8 votes from each respondent. 59% ofrespondents were school principals or senior teachers, 33% investors, overseasstudy agents and training institutions, and 8% were from education authoritiesand specialist education media. 337 schools received votes, up 20% on last yearand more than double that of two years ago. 11%, down from 19% last year, ofrespondents were non-Chinese. Schools were ranked on an index of 1 to 100, theschool with the most votes receiving the maximum index of 100. The rankings referto international schools in mainland China only.
Rupert Hoogewerf,Chairman and Chief Researcher of Hurun, said, “The survey for the HurunEducation Top International Schools in China concentrated exclusivelyon a peer review of ‘international school experts’ rather than parents, becausewe believe that experts in the education industry have a broader understandingof the overall quality delivered by international schools, whilst parents tendto focus on the school where their children are studying.”
“Covid-19 and educationreforms have had a significant impact on international schools in the past year.First, Chinese nationals, no matter the school, need to learn the samecurriculum in years 1 to 9 (until the age of 15), and second, if applicationsexceed quotas, schools need to adopt a lottery system for student admissions. Asfor the virus outbreak, whilst it has made recruitment of internationalteachers harder, it is – on the back of US-China tensions – driven more parentsto send their children to international schools domestically, rather thanabroad.”
“This ranking istargeted at parents, teachers and university admissions officers. For parents, the Hurun ranking can be a useful tool to help select the right school fortheir children, for teachers it can a useful guide to find out which schoolsare performing in the eyes of their peers, and for university admissionsofficers it can be used as a guide to understand the ranking of the schoolapplicants are coming from.” Hoogewerf added.
“Annual fees forinternational schools range from just below CNY 100,000 for the highlycompetitive public school international divisions up to CNY 300,000 forinternational schools open to non-Chinese passport holders only.”
