Local schools to begin staggered reopening on April 7

The Fujian Department of Education announced last week that students in the province will resume schooling in batches. High school senior students are set to resume class on April 7, with lower grade levels set to return to class as conditions permit.

Xiamen online retail sales exceeded 10 billion yuan in February

A third-party consulting firm selected by the Ministry of Commerce announced last week that February online retail sales in Xiamen exceeded 10 billion yuan, thanks to the rapid growth of e-commerce livestreaming in promotion of products. Xiamen had the highest total for any city in Fujian.

Shangcun Reservoir begins to store water

The Shangcun Reservoir last Friday began to store water flowing from the Longjin stream. The storage capacity of the reservoir tops 120 million cubic meters. The reservoir's dam is the largest of its kind in Fujian, stretching 338 meters wide and reaching up to 89 meters in height.

The reservoir is part of the Fangyang Hydro Project, which also includes the Shangji Hydropower Station, the Xikou Gate Dam and the Xikou-Xuzhuang Seepage Tunnel. When the project is fully operational, it will deliver an annual average of 200 million tons of high quality water to Xiamen, greatly easing pressure on the city's water supply.

Hospitality and tourism industry begins to rebound

Ctrip representatives announced last week that presales for hotels in Xiamen jumped tenfold over the past two weeks. Popular anchors in the city for bookings include the SM City Shopping Center, the Xiamen Train Station, Zhongshan Road, Huandao Road and Jimei School Village.

XiamenAir Jinyan Hotel general director Pan Guihong noted that the hotel will serve set meals for delivery. Pan Guihong added that the hotel generates up to 100,000 yuan in daily revenue from delivery orders.

Representatives of the Lujiang Hotel also announced the availability of delivered meals with prices ranging from 38 yuan to 48 yuan.

Conservation plans announced for pair of uninhabited islets

Local authorities recently approved conservation and development plans for Huoshaoyu and Datuyu, a pair of local uninhabited islets off Xiamen’s coast. The 70 million yuan project includes programs designed to protect endangered wildlife such as dolphins. Working docks will be constructed for each islet to provide access for conservation workers.

Five local firms shortlisted for tech pilot projects

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently announced a national list of this year’s big data industry development pilot projects. Five Xiamen-based firms made the list, along with an additional three firms based elsewhere in Fujian.

The local firms that made the list include Luqiao Information, Meiya Shangding, Nascent, State Grid Yili and Yilian Network. The projects involve the application of big data technologies to examine large data sets in the fields of power transmission, food safety, intelligent parking, enterprise communication and e-commerce.

Local traffic flows return to pre-crisis volume

City transportation officials announced last week that traffic throughput for the island of Xiamen’s tunnel and four bridges to the mainland have returned to levels from before the outbreak of covid-19. The mainland routes are now servicing 485,000 vehicles per day. Public transit passenger flow also continues to rise.

China institutes 14-day quarantine for all international arrivals

All inbound people entering Xiamen from other countries as well as transfer passengers are currently required to undergo a 14-day medical observation and a nucleic acid test upon arrival. Quarantined individuals are required to pay for their board and lodging. The new policy is designed to minimize the risk of imported covid-19 cases.

Huli recruits citizen park managers for Wuyuan Bay Wetland Park

Huli officials announced last week a call for citizen park managers to assist in the supervision and administration of routine affairs for the district’s Wuyuan Bay Wetland Park. Volunteers who wish to apply must be between the ages of 25 and 65, must be in good health and must hold at least a high school degree. Local residents can apply by calling 1528-026-0832 or by completing a registration from at the park’s management office by April 3.

King Long intelligent workstations for epidemic prevention to set up in Xiamen schools

Shuangshi Middle School carried out an epidemic prevention drill at its Fanghu campus last week. The drill included the use of five workstations created by locally-based King Long for use in the detection and prevention of infectious disease outbreaks. The workstations include the ability to detect within 10 seconds individuals with a temperature about 37.3 degrees Celsius and to initiate disinfection procedures.

The middle school plans to deploy a total of 10 workstations across both its campuses and dormitory facilities. The workstations will also be deployed at a number of area schools including Jimei University, Xiamen Number One High School and Wuyuan Number Two Experimental School.

Local hospitals announced recently streamlined fever clinic treatment procedures to handle an increase in covid-19 cases in Chinese citizens returning from overseas. The new procedures are able to provide screening results in as little as 4.5 hours. Future plans call for new polymerase chain reaction testing machines that can complete a nucleic acid test in two to three hours.

Updated bathroom facilities launched for Xiamen Mountains-to-Sea Health Trail

A series of 10 bathroom facilities along the Xiamen Mountains-to-Sea Health Trail recently received a number of upgrades. The overhaul includes new configurations and maintenance procedures as well as aesthetically pleasing guidelines and signage. The renovations also include new hand dryers, toilet paper dispensers and air fresheners.
