IMF Music Festival wows Xiamen |Xiamen Express

Xiamen's deputy mayor Han Jingyi, who also serves as the first deputy president of the Association of Sister Cities, met last week with sister city Nice's deputy mayor Rudy Salles.

Mr. Han noted during the event that Xiamen and Nice share common traits in terms of their natural environment and urban development. He added that he looks forward to deeper cooperation between the two cities in the fields of tourism and culture. Xiamen's deputy mayor also said that both cities have robust film and media industries, citing Xiamen' status as home to the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival.

Deputy Mayor Salles praised Xiamen's tourism and cultural amenities. Mr. Salles cited the film and tourism industries as two venues for cooperation between the two cities.

Upcoming cross-cultural events for the two cities include a visit to Xiamen by the Nice Symphony Orchestra in November and a joint performance with the Xiamen Choir in celebration of the fifth anniversary of the sister city relationship between the two cities.

The Astro Ocean Cruise brand recently announced that it will christen its upcoming 70,000-ton luxury cruise ship the Gulangyu. The 1,880-passenger cruise ship will make its inaugural departure from the Xiamen International Cruise Port in September. The Astro Ocean Cruise company is a public-private joint venture with its headquarters in Xiamen. The Gulangyu is currently slated to operate eight voyages from Xiamen in 2019. The luxury liner will make a series of international cruises to destinations in southeast Asia.

Xiamen's port has hosted 50 cruise ship arrivals in the year to date, including a total of more than 158,000 passengers. Both the number of ships and the volume of passengers are up by more than 50 percent year-on-year, making Xiamen one of China's busiest cruise home ports.

Representatives of the Art Xiamen Fair announced last week that the event will host both a spring edition devoted to contemporary art and a fall edition devoted to classical art.

Both the Art Xiamen Fair and the Art Xiamen (Contemporary) Fair are directed by the Xiamen Municipal Committee of the CPC and sponsored by the Organizing Committee of the Art Xiamen Exposition. The next edition of the fair kicks off on June 6 at the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center. The four-day exhibition will include 10,000 square meters of display space dedicated to artwork from 75 art institutes and more than ten countries, including France, Japan and Italy. The event will also include more than ten Xiamen galleries.

Nanjing University announced last week that Lin Jin, a tenth grade student from Xiamen Number One High School, will join a scientific exploration team leaving for the Aegean Sea in October. Mr. Lin is the sole Chinese mainland high school student to participate in the expedition, which includes 26 Nanjing University undergraduates.

Jimei recently announced the establishment of a pair of conservation centers dedicated to preserving key elements of the district's intangible cultural heritage. The city of Xiamen recently recognized the Dus ancestral worship in Maluan and the Gaos ancestral worship in Gaopu as historically unique elements of local culture. The conservation centers are dedicated to preserving the history and continuance of these local traditions.

The Xiamen City Duty Free shop officially opened on May 17 in the China City Shopping Center. The new shop is one of five city duty-free shops in the country, and the first in Fujian. Operated by the China Duty Free Goods Group, the shop allows consumers headed abroad to make duty-free purchases on site and pick up the goods at the city's international air terminal when clearing Customs. Purchases must be made at least 24 hours in advance and all duty-free goods must be carried out of China.
