Passenger vehicle toll fees ended for isle of Xiamen

City officials announced last week the immediate end of toll fees for passenger vehicles entering or exiting the island of Xiamen by bridge or tunnel. Commuters who prepaid bridge or tunnel toll fees may apply for a refund through the city's online transit app or in person at the city government's transit department service windows.
BRT Express Line Nine debuts

Xiamen transit authorities announced that Express Line Nine, the BRT's newest route, opened on Monday. The new line begins at Gaoqi airport and traverses Fangzhong Road, North Yunding Road, Middle Yunding Road and East Lianqian Road before arriving at the Qianpu BRT terminal.
Summer fishing moratorium now in effect

The annual summer fishing moratorium began last week, impacting 580 local fishing boats. The moratorium is slated to run through August 16. City officials expect the policy to have an impact on the local prices of fresh marine products.
Tourists flood XM for May Day holiday

A May Day holiday travel report released by ctrip.com ranked Xiamen as the second most popular domestic destination for self-guided vacations and the fourth most popular package tour destination.
Online travel agency Tongcheng-Elong reported that Xiamen hotels notched mainland China’s sixth-highest volume of hotel reservations. Separately, online service platform Mafengwo announced that Gulangyu ranked as the fifth most popular domestic scenic spot during the four-day holiday.
City tourism authorities added that the occupancy rate during the holiday for local hotels topped 69 percent while occupancy rate for area hostels exceeded 75 percent.
Phase two of the Huandong Coastal linear park to debut in September

Local officials recently announced that the second phase of the city's landscape project for Tongan continues apace and is set to open in September. The 17-kilometer phase two includes upgraded greenery and a range of amenities along the Tongan coast.

The initial phase of the project spans approximately eight kilometers and its features include Gold Beach, a track and a children's playground. When the third phase of the 46-kilometer project is complete at the end of September, the renovated bayside pathway will encircle the Huandong Maritime Area.


Zhangjiang Bay Bridge now open

The Zhangzhou Coastal Passage Zhangjiang Bay Bridge officially opened this month, becoming Zhangzhou's longest cross-bay bridge. With a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour, the six-lane bridge reduces to less than thirty minutes the transit time between Xiamen and the towns of Lieyu, Chendai, Dongshan and Zhao'an.

Running between Zhangpu and Yunxiao, commuters can see from the 3.5-kilometer bridge local sights such as the Haizhong Pagoda. Regional authorities said that the bridge will deepen the integration of the urban centers of Xiamen and Zhangzhou.




Lin Sheng painting exhibit debuts

The Haixiafeng Art Space Exhibition Hall on Huli Avenue recently debuted a new exhibition of landscape paintings by Lin Sheng. The exhibition for the noted local painter includes works painted over the past decade. The artist is known for his representative landscape paintings of Xiamen. Open through May 28, the exhibit is free of charge for the general public.


China Engineering Academy offers membership to four FJ professors

厦大三名“60后”教授入围工程院院士增选有效候选人
The China Engineering Academy recently released its newest list of candidates for induction. Among the 531 candidates are four from universities in Fujian, including three from Xiamen University and one from the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.

The newly-inducted Xiamen University engineers are Bai Mindong, Xia Ningshao and Zhao Yanjing. Selected every two years, academics are chosen for membership based on achievements in and contributions to engineering technology.



Two local villages earn provincial Gold Tourist Village status

Two Xiamen villages recently received nominations as candidates for Fujian's inaugural Gold Tourist Village list. A team of experts selected a total of 30 villages for the debut of the list, including the villages of Qingjiao in Haicang and Junying in Tongan. Both villages are important local sites for rural tourism, thanks to their vibrant natural scenery and robust support for agrotourism.



Rainwater capture system set to debut in Xiangan

翔安居民再多一处休闲好去处
Local authorities announced last week that the Dongshan Rainwater Harvesting Park successfully passed a series of initial tests. When fully operational, the rainwater capture system will collect and purify rainwater absorbed in the area. The water collected by the system will become the primary source for the park's watering system. Built by the Xiangan Construction and Development Company, the park is located at the intersection of Xiangan South Road and Hongzhong Avenue.


Calligraphy and painting exhibit opens at the Xiamen Museum

高仿真古书画展 展出至5月23日
A new exhibition of calligraphy and painting replicas recently debuted at the Xiamen Museum. Created jointly by the Xiamen Museum and the Zhangzhou Museum, the exhibit includes high-quality replicas of key artwork produced by the Nigensha Company of Japan during the Jin, Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties. 
The exhibit includes famed works by Huai Su, Huang Gongwang and Wang Xizhi, among others.
