Bus air conditioners now available during warm weather

City transit authorities announced last Friday that local bus and BRT drivers may activate vehicle air conditioners in response to recent high temperatures. The announcement comes more than a month in advance of the official seasonal period for air conditioners on city buses, which runs from June through September.
Qing Art Space debuts Dato' Jiang Zhencheng art exhibit

The Qing Art Space gallery recently debuted a new exhibition devoted to the work of Dato' Jiang Zhencheng, a Chinese calligrapher from Malaysia. A resident of Penang, the 74-year-old artist has ancestral ties to the city. Dato' 
Jiang Zhencheng
 is an honorary Xiamen citizen thanks to his efforts to promote commercial and cultural ties between Penang and Xiamen.

The current exhibit includes a dozen of Dato' Jiang Zhencheng's calligraphic works. The artist hosted a calligraphy salon 
and visited the Xiamen Overseas Chinese Museum and the Xiamen Daily Academy of Paintings and Calligraphy during the launch of the exhibition.




Xiamen University launches experimental rocket

The Jiageng One rocket of Xiamen University launched from a desert site in northwest China on April 3, according to representatives from the university's department of aerospace engineering. The launch is part of a project to study the possibility of a fivefold increase in the speed of aircraft, bringing airports around the world to within two hours of each other.

Xiamen University representatives added that project researchers are also focused on recycling and reusing rocket parts between missions and on improving rocket aerodynamics.



Blue-tailed bee-eaters spotted in Xiamen

Local birdwatchers conducted a count of blue-tailed bee-eaters during the peak season for the migratory birds in Xiamen. Approximately 120 bee-eaters were spotted in the Wuyuan Bay Wetland and Zhonglun parks.

Blue-tailed bee-eaters reside primarily in southeast Asia, migrating to Xiamen between April and July to lay eggs, incubate and raise their offspring. The Wuyuan Bay Blue-tailed Bee-eater Nature Reserve is managed under a closed policy that tightly restricts human access to the reserve.


Xiamen Railway Station logs record traffic flow

Local transit officials announced last week an increase in the frequency of passenger rail for the May Day travel season. Passenger flows peaked on May 1 with an estimated 155,000 passengers, a record-high number of single-day passengers for the Xiamen Railway Station.

Authorities expect main passenger flows to service regional cities and scenic spots as well as major tourist hubs such as Hangzhou, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Wuyi Mountain. The six-day period from April 30 through May 5 is expected to include 120,000 daily passengers, an increase of 6.4 percent over normal traffic flows.



Jimei University rowing crew earns gold medal

The Jimei University rowing crew recently captured first place in the eight-men single-paddle event at the China Shaoxing (Shangyu) rowing competition in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. The China Rowing Association hosted the event, which was sponsored by the Zhejiang Sports Bureau and the city of Shaoxing.

The competition included international entrants from schools such as the University of Sydney in Australia and Oxford University in England. National entrants came from throughout China.

A Yale University crew from the United States captured the women’s four-person single-blade event. Jimei University’s crew came in sixth overall in the event, finishing first among boats from Chinese universities.




XM to remove all newspaper kiosks by the end of June

Local authorities announced recently that all of the city's streetside newspaper kiosks will be dismantled and permanently removed by the end of June. Eight newsstands along Xiahe Road were dismantled last month.

Originally built in the 1990s, local newspaper kiosks peaked at 257 sites before declining in the face of the rise of smartphones and the mobile internet. Physical newspapers and magazines will continue to be distributed through convenience stores.



XM economy grew eight percent in the first quarter

City officials announced last week that Xiamen achieved a regional GDP of 111.4 billion yuan in the first quarter of the year, an increase of eight percent year-on-year. Output of forestry and fishery products in the primary or raw material industry surged by more than 40 percent. More than 60 percent of local firms in the manufacturing or secondary industry increased production.

The services or tertiary industry boosted the city's GDP growth by more than 4.4 percentage points.


New XM bus app officially launches

The Xiamen Public Transport Group recently hosted a launch ceremony for the 
厦门掌上行
 app at the bus station of Conference and Exhibition Center. The mobile phone program facilitates mobile payments for bus fares and provides a host of transit-related services.

In advance of the app's official launch, transit authorities tested mobile payments on the 88 and 115 bus routes. More than 500 area buses servicing 34 lines now feature card readers for a variety of mobile phone payments, including WeChat payment and Alipay. By the end of July, more than 3,800 buses services over 300 bus lines will accept mobile phone payments.
