Jimei Vertical Marathon kicks off

The Jimei Vertical Marathon kicked off last Saturday at the Chengyi International Business Operation Center. Approximately 500 runners raced to the top of the 262-meter high 54-story building, including 10 international entrants. The event also included a prize quiz, a tour of the building's viewing platform tour, a concert and a Jimei New Town photo exhibition.
XM buses to add mobile payments

Local transit authorities announced recently the phased rollout of a wide range of mobile payment methods. The upgrade will begin with an initial batch of 500 buses. All of the city's 3,800 buses will receive the update by the end of July. 

Strait Travel Fair concludes

The annual Strait Travel Fair and the China (Xiamen) International Leisure Tourism Expo kicked off last Friday at the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center. Covering an exhibition of 60,000 square meters, the three-day event boasted 2,600 booths and exhibitors from more than 40 countries, including first-time participant countries such as Finland, Iran and Nepal. 
The fair showcased a wide range of tourism items, including travel routes, cultural and creative products, as well as food from around the world. The twin events drew 226,000 visitors and the total transaction volume hit 345 million yuan. The center stage of the exhibition hall featured approximately 50 performances by global exhibitors.
Booths set up by exhibitors from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan increased from 110 booths last year to 150 this year. Representatives of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu hosted a joint delegation at the event. 


May Day holiday to greet up to 160 million domestic travelers

Travel agency ctrip.com estimates that up to 160 million people will travel during the upcoming May Day holiday. Bookings for a wide range of domestic destinations are up significantly, with travel on some air routes surging by up to 40 percent. Top international destinations include southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.
Xiamen International Food Expo to debut in September

The inaugural China (Xiamen) International Grain Oil and Food and Equipment Technology Expo will launch at the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center on September 20. The event is sponsored by the China Grain Industry Association, the Fujian Grain Industry Association and the Xiamen Grain Industry Association. Event organizers said the expo will highlight grain, oil and food products as well as a wide range of industry-related technology.


Industrial Heritage Protection list includes two XM sites

National authorities recently announced the first set of additions to the country's list of Industrial Heritage Protection. The Ministry of Science Coordination and Publicity, the Institute of Innovation Strategies of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology and the Urban Planning Society of China oversee the list.
Two sites in Xiamen made the list, including the Shangli Reservoir, which was built in 1924 as the city's first reservoir. The end of the reservoir is buttressed by the Shangli Reservoir Dam, which is 25 meters high and 108 meters long.
The former site in Xiamen of the Great Northern Telegraph Company also entered the list this year. Based in Shanghai and on Gulangyu, the company was the first foreign business that laid submarine cables in China and it established a telegraph transceiver room on Gulangyu (pictured below). Founded in 1869, the Danish company came to China in 1870 to lay submarine cables from Hong Kong to Shanghai, from Shanghai to Nagasaki, and from Nagasaki to Vladivostok.
Company official established a system of coding Chinese characters with four digits, enabling the transmission of telegrams in Chinese. In 1871, the company connected the cable between Hong Kong and Shanghai at its Gulangyu facility on Tianwei Road. The site became one of the first places to send and receive telegrams in China.
Fuzhou University establishes Xiamen Arts and Crafts Institute of Lacquer Art

Fuzhou University recently opened a new Xiamen Craft Academy Lacquer Art Department. The university offers lacquer paint classwork at the Jimei campus of the Xiamen Institute of Arts and Crafts. The project is sponsored by the National Art Fund Management Center and by Fuzhou University. The school's Fine Arts Institute is home to China's only department of lacquer arts. More than 100 undergraduate and graduate students belong to Fuzhou University's lacquer arts program.
Xiamen fisheries scheduled to close in May

Provincial authorities announced recently that the summer moratorium on fishing in local waters will commence on May 1 and run through August 16. The 3.5-month ban on fishing is predicted to impact the retail price of local fish products, although chilled aquatic products and farmed fish are expected to address the market gap.



Foreign capital and enterprises surge in Xiamen

City commerce authorities announced recently that 271 new wholly foreign-owned enterprises registered in Xiamen in the first quarter of the year. The actual use of foreign capital topped 4.5 billion yuan, an increase of 22 percent year-on-year. The amount accounted for 46 percent of the total for all of Fujian, a historically high percentage.
The first quarter of the year included 23 new foreign investment projects with contracts of more than $10 million and 11 new foreign investment projects with an actual use of more than $10 million in the primary industry, which includes the extraction of raw materials.
In the first three months, 22 new enterprises were set up in the secondary or manufacturing industry. The actual use of foreign capital reached 2.8 billion yuan, an increase of 32 percent. The actual use of foreign capital in the high-tech manufacturing industry exceeded one billion yuan, concentrated in the fields of electronic and communications equipment, aviation and equipment manufacturing.
In the tertiary or services industry, 249 new enterprises in the first quarter registered 1.7 billion yuan in the actual use of foreign capital, up by an increase of 11.1 percent on an annual basis. Foreign capital in the high-tech service industry hit 440 million yuan, an increase of 19.3 percent, in the areas of information services, R&D and design.


Amazon exits China market, continues exports from the country

Amazon recently announced that it will shutter its online store in China. The firm will maintain the local version of its Kindle digital bookstore and Amazon Web Services. The retailing giant's decision does not impact its cross-border operations for shipping goods from Chinese merchants to international customers.
 "[This] does not affect Amazon's cross-border e-commerce business in Xiamen," said Chen Zhitie, the president of the Xiamen Cross-Border E-Commerce Association. Mr. Chen added that Amazon's cross-border business in Xiamen will continue to grow.



Main Shangcun dam structure completed

The officials of the Changtai Fangyang key water control project announced that work wrapped up last week on the main structure of the Shangcun dam. The reservoir is expected to begin storing water by the end of August. Stretching 338 meters and reaching up to 89 meters in height, the dam is the largest in Fujian. Its reservoir will accommodate up to 123 million cubic meters of water, 32 times the scale of Yundang lake. When complete, the reservoir will serve as a second water supply for Xiamen and will deliver an annual average of 200 million tons of water.


Tunneling work continues for subway Line Three

厦门地铁3号线岛内首个盾构隧道双线贯通
Work on the 1.3-kilometer left section of the tunnel between Shuangshi Middle School Station and Wuyuanwan Station for Line Three of the subway system reached the Shuangshi Middle School Station last week. This section of tunnel runs at a depth of nine to 18 meters underground.
