Job Title: Research Assistant - Data Analysis
Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation is looking for three Research Assistants on a temporary basis to work with the China Philanthropy Project to help the research team research, collect, verify, and analyze donation data in China. The current project’s website is: https://chinaphilanthropy.ash.harvard.edu.
Ideal applicants should have a strong research background as well as interest in the development of philanthropy in China. Successful candidates should be able to accomplish the following five tasks:
(1) Identify articles relating to Chinese philanthropic donations on Google and Baidu and enter the relevant sample data into our database; 
(2) Extract donation data from multiple online sources such as philanthropic foundations and corporate annual reports, as well as 3rd party aggregators;
(3) Code the data into the database, analyze the dataset, and compute summary statistics; 
(4) Manually validate donation data gathered through our machine learning web crawler 
(5) Contact Chinese donors and recipient organizations to verify data.
Qualifications:
- Fluent in written and spoken Chinese.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP, etc.
- Experience with web crawler is a plus.
- Ability to work within a team under time constraints and meet deadlines.
- Must be available to work regularly from the Ash Center office in Cambridge, MA for the duration of the position.
- Must be able to work 35 hours per week during the summer. Pay is $15-20 per hour.
This opportunity will involve working with faculty and researchers to expand and deepen an exciting database of top Chinese philanthropists and recipient organizations in China, which seeks to quantify indices related to generosity, diversity, and innovation in this emerging sector. This work will link to the Ash Center’s innovation activities and China Programs.
