Having a gap year after a period of study contributes to students’ development (TS). In particular, travelling or taking an internship (A) could broaden their views (C). For example, it is the one year I spent travelling to Australia before starting my university life (A) that gave me the exposure to different cultures and opportunities to study diverse customs, traditions and religions (B). This experience (B) has expanded my horizon (C). Further, a gap year (A) can cultivate students’ independence (C). This is because having no relatives or friends to rely on (A) forces students to hold themselves accountable for their decisions and their consequences(B), which can hone their critical thinking skills and ability to be self-reliant (C).

Admittedly, there are certain dangers in taking time off at that critical age (CS:TS). One risk is that students may become so caught up / addicted to in the exciting lifestyle that they may be reluctant to continue their education (B). They might end up never resuming their studies, or they may struggle to readjust to an academic environment (C). However, we must take into consideration the necessity of academic qualifications in future job hunting, which makes it practically impossible for students to refuse to return to their university studies (RF:E). What is more, there are young people who are well-disciplined and aware of the importance of academic knowledge . They would be willing to resume their studies after a year off (E).
