APAPA Ohio Youth Chapter
Summer Internship Training Day 2 (5/19/2018)
by Padraig Hurley & Andy Yu
On May 19th, 2018, members of the APAPA Ohio Youth Chapter attended an internship training session organized by APAPA Ohio. This meeting was the second one in two weeks, taking place at the Washington Township Fire Department Administration Building in order to attend the Internship Program Training, and the intent of the meetings were to educate the students on workplace etiquette, general advice, and how to succeed at our internship. A few of the students who attended were accepted into an internship program with the Ohio State Government, including the House of Representatives, the County Recorder’s office, and more.
The day kicked off with a round table with Director Cao discussing the different skills needed in the workplace. Along the way, he brought up many lessons he learned throughout life to help teach us. The discussion led to advice on technical, problem solving, and communication skills, as well as lots of advice about finding an “identity” and a “purpose”. Director Cao with his plenty of work experience was also able to share many lessons and opinions that are sure to be memorable and guiding.
Following Director Cao, Mrs. Melissa Zhang went over the office do’s and don'ts. Mrs. Zhang covered PIE theory (performance/image/exposure), and explained how each is important in advancing one’s career. PIE theory was a new concept to most of the youth, but even some of the adults had never heard of it before! Everyone had lots to learn from Ms. Zhang about how to perform, develop and image, and get proper exposure in the workplace.
By this time the day was half through and everyone decided to move onto the lunch block. The lunch served as a great time for everyone to socialize and reflect on what they had heard so far.
After lunch, Ms. Zhang moved onto the second part of her presentation where the highlight was an activity called “30 seconds to impress.” Everyone was given two minutes to develop a 30 second speech that would show off the best on themselves. Everyone's presentations were great and all had something that could be improved, showing that everyone is still learning. This was important because it is necessary to make solid connections with your colleagues in the workplace.
The third topic of the day was “How to Succeed in Your Internship,” presented by Yanling Yin. The presentation began with a discussion about “What is Success,” and creating “SMART” goals. This was followed by some advice for the first day of an internship, and an activity about first impressions plus the importance and what makes a good first impression. After that, Ms. Yin talked about what to do everyday, including communication, working hard, finding a mentor, making checkpoints, and how to deal with difficult people. Finally, Ms. Yin discussed what to do on the last day of one’s internship and past that.
We thought that the lessons we learned were very helpful. Although in a normal classroom, sitting and learning for nearly 8 hours would have made us bored to death, the content and hands on teaching style was effective in keeping us engaged. It was an overall very productive day that each and every member that attended took something away from. We are confident that we are prepared for our internships with the state government this summer. The lessons and messages from all of the speakers should prepare the APAPA youth for their summer internships, and of them should feel comfortable and ready to go as their first days draw closer.
