3月的最后一天，英国剑桥的市民们雨中为霍金送行。
这位理论物理学家在寻找宇宙的答案时，也接受了生命的深度和复杂性。
近500名霍金的亲友和同事在下午2点聚集在圣玛丽大教堂（Great St Mary's Church）为他送行，就在霍金多年来担任剑桥大学研究主任的那条路上。剑桥当天的气温十分寒冷，还下着小雨，但道路两旁早已挤满了来自世界各地的上万名民众。
在霍金生前所在的剑桥大学冈维尔与凯斯学院（Gonville and Caius College），人们自发在门口留下鲜花以纪念。霍金在这里从事教学和科研52年，学院目前还保留着霍金生前的办公室。
下午2点，霍金的灵柩抵达剑桥大学圣玛丽大教堂，教堂鸣钟76次，以悼念霍金享年76岁。
霍金的灵柩灵柩上放有白色的百合和玫瑰，分别象征着宇宙和北极星。

英国男演员Eddie Redmayne，曾在2014年主演关于霍金的传记电影《The Theory of Everything万物理论》，并获得奥斯卡奖，他在霍金葬礼上致词。霍金的一位学生和长子也分别在葬礼上致词。葬礼是为霍金的亲友和同事举办的私人仪式，不对外开放。
今年晚些时候，Westminster Abbey大教堂将在感恩节举行纪念霍金的隆重仪式，将他的骨灰安放在大教堂，就在牛顿爵士的坟墓附近。
霍金的家人说，这个城市是霍金深爱的：
"He was an integral and highly recognizable part of the university and the city,"  "For this reason, we have decided to hold his funeral in the city that he loved so much and which loved him. Our father’s life and work meant many things to many people, both religious and non-religious. So, the service will be both inclusive and traditional, reflecting the breadth and diversity of his life."
