Russian national Catherine Valley, 25, studies at Fudan University in Shanghai and has been living in China for nearly two years.
She said WeChat is not popular in Russia, but after moving to China she quickly became addicted to the app. Valley said that she is confused about why so many Chinese girls update their profiles so frequently with selfies.
"Chinese girls seem to use their mobile phone as a mirror and cannot stop taking selfies. They post selfies like every hour," Valley said, clarifying that the vainglorious content itself is less annoying than the frequency with which it is posted.
Similar opinions were expressed by American Brendon Powell, who started using WeChat in 2014 and already has over 190 WeChat friends.
"I don't like posts where people only take pictures of themselves. I was in Starbucks yesterday and a Chinese woman with a kid sat down. She didn't pay any attention to her kid, she just kept taking selfies," Powell said.

"If I take a selfie with a white background around me, it's just worthless," said Powell, a student at Fudan University, adding that his other pet peeve is preachy posts.
"People (on WeChat) tend to tell you how you should behave. I don't want to hear your advice unless I ask for it," he said.

"I see a lot of fake news in my WeChat moments about the US, especially from my Fudan classmates," Powell said. "Same thing happens everywhere, not just in China. People don't know about certain topics so they just post it, thinking it's breaking news, but it's just not true."

American Donnie Giolzetti has been in China for more than six years and has witnessed WeChat's rise. For Giolzetti, the worst posts on WeChat are those from people selling stuff.
"If I see pictures of a bunch of watches and necklaces, one after the other, I just block them immediately," he said, noting that his second-least favorite persons on WeChat are attention seekers who always complain about how hard their day was only to get people to comment.
Similarly, Powell blocks any individuals who post pictures of products all the time. "I don't mind one or two posts. But I had certain people posting every other hour about new items. Their posts flooded my 'discover' with handbags and that kind of stuff," he said.
American Jesse Flagren-Theremin said that a majority of content on WeChat is repetitive and unoriginal. "When I go through it, I have already seen similar content 10 times. Most people seem to post and reshare the same thing over and over again," he said.
