哈利路亚（Hallelujah）的“哈利路”在希伯来语中是“赞美”的意思，而“亚”是“耶和华”的简称。由于历史原因，犹太人不能直呼上帝的名字，所以“哈利路亚”便是赞美主的意思。
以“哈利路亚”为题创作的歌曲，广为流传的有两首，一首是亨德尔1741年创作的《弥赛亚》中的“哈利路亚”，另一首便是1985年科恩创作的这首。虽然两首《哈利路亚》风格不同，但都带给人一种尊崇的神圣感。
