① rather单独使用：当rather单独使用时，表示前后两句话的顺承关系，翻译成“进一步地说”。
【例句】The dark regions in the starry night sky are not pockets in the universe that are devoid of stars as had long been thought. Rather, they are dark because of interstellar dust that hides the stars behind it.
【译文】繁星夜空中的黑暗区并非像长期以来人们认为的那样是没有恒星存在的。进一步讲，黑暗区黑暗的原因是星际尘埃掩盖了后面的恒星。
变体1. not…, rather, …：前半句话否定形式，后半句话肯定形式，两句话实质上表达的含义一致。如：“他不是个好人，进一步说，他是个坏人。”
【例句】In Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry does not reject integration or the economic and moral promise of the American dream; rather, she remains loyal to this dream while looking, realistically, at its incomplete realization.
【译文】在Raisin in the Sun中，Lorraine Hansberry 并不反对民族融合以及美国梦在经济和道德上的前景；进一步讲，她坚持这个梦想，同时她很现实地看到这个梦想没有完全实现的一面。
变体2. or, rather：or在这里就是充当一个并列连词，因此这个结构表达的含义与rather单独使用完全一样。
【例句】The Romantic period was not the period in which biography was invented—or, rather, the period in which some of its informing principles were invented.
【译文】浪漫主义时代并不是传记发明的时代——或进一步的讲，也不是传记的基本原则发明的时期。
② rather than：引导句内对比，等于not。
【例句】Roger Rosenblatt’s book Black Fiction, in attempting to apply literary rather than sociopolitical criteria to its subject, successfully alters the approach taken by most previous studies.
【译文】Roger Rosenblatt的著作Black Fiction尝试用文学标准而非社会政治的标准来研究这个课题，成功地改变了此前大多数研究所采取的方法。
③ rather+adj. =very
【例句】By 1950, the results of attempts to relate brain processes to mental experience appeared rather discouraging.
【译文】到1950年为止，将大脑过程和精神体验相联系的尝试所获得的结果相当令人沮丧。
