北京人流量最大的旅游目的地之一天坛公园此前频频遭遇厕纸偷窃。现在，用户若需使用厕纸，就必须站在一部拥有高清摄像头的壁挂式机器前。该机器的软件将记住最近用户的脸，若同一用户在固定时间段内再次出现，它将拒绝启动自动出纸机。
多年来，大量公厕厕纸被一些人拿到家中使用。最近媒体对这一现象进行调查，发现大多数是老年人。此类行为给公厕管理带来相当沉重的财政负担。有时，刚补充的一卷新纸几分钟内就被拿光，留给其他用户空纸卷。
面部识别摄像头要求用户脱帽、摘掉太阳镜。这引发有关侵犯个人隐私的担忧。且识别需要处理时间，这对那些着急使用厕所的人来说颇为不便。
智能厕纸机已在内地社交媒体上引发热烈讨论。大多数人认为偷窃厕纸这种行为应被阻止。但也有少数人觉得公众没必要对此过于气愤。一名微信用户说：“公厕内的廉价厕纸包含许多有毒材料，如荧光剂等。过度使用只会损害他们的健康。”

Indians don’t use toilet paper as such but sadly enough, there is no water to flush and wash. Latest proposal of Swatcch Bharat is to make open air toilets free for all and use soil available in plenty for cleaning and covering the loo for manure.
