巴以冲突，中方表态了，这个英文词很关键！

用英语怎么说？

前不久，外长王毅会见了欧盟外交与安全政策高级代表博雷利。在会见后的记者会上，王毅外长就巴勒斯坦问题，比较全面地阐述了中方的立场。表述的用词并不复杂，但有些话在翻译成英语时，需要格外注意。

比如，“建国”中的“国”字，在英语中究竟该用哪个词？

这一问题的根源在于巴勒斯坦独立建国的夙愿迟迟未能实现，在于巴勒斯坦人民遭受的历史不公一直未能得到纠正。

The root cause of this question lies in the long delay in realizing the dream of an independent State of Palestine and the failure to redress the historical injustice suffered by the Palestinian people.

上面的“实现”和“纠正”在中文里，都是动词，但在用英语表达时，“迟迟未能实现”译为long delay，“未能得到纠正”译为failure to redress，都把名词变成了动词。

在翻译时，有时可以打破原文的句型和词性，目的是让译文更加简洁和地道。

“独立建国”在上面译为an independent State of Palestine，也是把动词变成名词，“国”对应的单词是state。

柯林斯词典对state的解释是You can refer to countries as states, particularly when you are discussing politics. (政治上所指的) 国家。

这里指的正是巴勒斯坦的政治地位，所以在这里用了state，而不是别的表示国家的词。中国支持的两国方案two-state solution也是用的state。

redress表示remedy or set right (an undesirable or unfair situation)，即纠正不好的局面。

injustice表示a lack of fairness in a situation，即不公正。

表示政治上所指的国家，除了state，还可以用另外一个很像的词。

以色列有建国的权利，巴勒斯坦同样有建国的权利。

Israel has the right to statehood, so does Palestine.

这里在state后面加了后缀hood。state是一个可数名词，表示国家，加了后缀之后，statehood表示作为国家的地位或状态，是一个不可数名词。

国家用state表示，那民族呢？

犹太民族已不在世界上颠沛流离，巴勒斯坦民族何时才能重返家园？

The Jewish nation is no longer homeless in the world, but when will the Palestinian nation return to its home?

上面对应“民族”的词是nation。这个词有好几个意思。可以表示国家，这时nation的解释是A nation is an individual country considered together with its social and political structures。

这是从社会和政治结构的角度所指的国家，而前面用的state是从政治上所指的国家。虽然翻译成中文都是国家，但意思的侧重点还是有所不同。

nation也可以表示民族，这时nation的解释是The nation is sometimes used to refer to all the people who live in a particular country, or all the people who belong to a particular ethnic group. 可以指全体国民，或者是某个民族。

在提到国家时，还会经常用到country一词。country的解释是A country is one of the political units which the world is divided into, covering a particular area of land. 从这个解释可以看出，country泛指国家，和state、nation是有所不同的。

country的另一个解释是The people who live in a particular country can be referred to as the country. 也就是国民的意思，不能像nation一样，表示某个名族。

state，nation，country，3个很简单，也是我们很熟悉的词。看上去很像，但其实是有微妙的区别的！
