布林肯用了这个词，说明访华的目的

事关重大的、缓和、试金石

用英语怎么说？

布林肯两天的访华之行，吸引了全世界的目光。

昨天，从一早开始，“见，还是不见”，就成了CNN等外媒关注的焦点。

下午四点半之后，中美两国媒体几乎同一时间推送了breaking news：习主席会见美国国务卿布林肯。

上午就挂在CNN首页的标题也终于从将来时is to meet，变成了一般现在时meets（新闻标题中常用一般现在时表示已发生的事情）。

在事关重大的北京访问的最后一天，布林肯见了中国国家主席，此次访问旨在缓和日趋紧张的局势

stake的意思是赌注，high stakes连在一起，中间加连词符就成了一个形容词high-stakes，字典里一般译成“高风险的”。

但如果把布林肯的访华之旅说成是“高风险的访问”，似乎并不妥当。

这里的high-stakes更多是指此次访问对双方都很重要，因为双方都可能从中gain or lose a great deal，所以翻译成事关重大的、利益攸关的，更合适一些。

simmer的原意是小火慢炖，引申表示a conflict does not actually happen for a period of time, but eventually builds up to the point where it does，（冲突）酝酿或日趋激化。

cool tensions是在国际关系领域常用的地道表达，表示缓和紧张局势，让紧张局势降温。

CNN接着在文中提到，会见约从下午4:34开始，到5:09结束，持续了半个多小时。

时间报道得如此精确，可以看出美国人对这次会面非常看重。

布林肯是五年来第一位访问北京的美国国务卿，在中美互不信任持续之际，布林肯与中国高层官员进行会谈，被认为是两国能否达成某种缓和的关键试金石。

detente读作/ˌdeɪˈtɑːnt/ ，来自于法语，是国际关系领域一个比较正式的名词，和之前的cool tensions意思相近，表示（紧张关系的）缓和，改善。

中学学习化学时，我们都用过石蕊试纸，做过酸碱测试，英文叫做litmus test，它还常用来引申表示an effective and definite way of proving sth. or measuring sth, 立见分晓的检验办法，也可译成试金石。

在会见结束后，布林肯在驻美大使馆举行了记者会，强调两天的访问，在引导双边关系回到正轨方面取得了进展（made progress toward steering relations back on track）。

布林肯在记者会中提到：美国无意在经济上遏制中国。

One of the important things for me to do on this trip was to disabuse our Chinese host of the notion that we are seeking to economically contain them.

我此行要做的重要事情之一是要消除中国认为我们在寻求经济上遏制他们。

这里布林肯用了一个不太常见的词disabuse，disabuse sb. (of sth.) 是一个很正式的说法，表示to tell sb that what they think is true is, in fact, not true，消除，去掉（某人）的不实想法。

他也在记者会上，反复用到了美国最近从官方到民间都强调的一个词：de-risking。

“There is a profound difference for the United States, and for many other countries, between ‘de-risking’ and decoupling,” he said. “We are for de-risking and diversifying.”

“对美国和许多其他国家来说，‘去风险’和脱钩之间存在着深刻的区别，”他说，“我们是寻求去风险和多样化”。

不过，无论是“去风险”，还是“多样化”，真正要消除lingering distrust，仅靠创造新词和老词新用，是远远不够的。
