XMU celebrates 97th anniversary

Xiamen University celebrated its 97th anniversary last Saturday. University officials announced at a weekend ceremony that it had raised an additional 53 million yuan in alumni donations. Since last April the university has netted a total of 120 million yuan in donations.
XM receives 1.32 M tourists during Qingming holiday

According to statistics released by the city holiday office, Xiamen received 1.32 million tourists from home and abroad during the three-day Qingming Festival holiday, generating total tourism revenue of 1.25 billion yuan. Tuniu.com and Lvmama.com, two major domestic online travel agencies both announced that Xiamen ranked the second most popular destination for domestic travel during the holiday. 
Random sampling conducted by the city holiday office also showed that family independent tourists, including self-driving tourists, accounted for 95.1 percent of the total. Young tourists made up a greater portion compared with last year, with those falling in the age group of 20 to 39 accounting for 66.8 percent of all guests. Experts believe the phenomenon is due to the growing consuming power of new parents who were born in 1980s and 1990s.

Tunneling to finish this year for subway Line Two

The city transit authorities announced that tunneling for the subway's Line Two will be completely finished by the end of the year, along with the majority of construction for the route's stations. Line Two is slated to begin trial operation next year.
Art flash mob on Gulangyu

“艺术快闪”再现琴岛人文情怀

On the last day's afternoon of Qingming Festival, Gulangyu subdistrict office saw an art flash mob named “World's Gulangyu”, in which more than 30 volunteers from age 5 to 70 participated, showing the culture and art of the city. The activity included singing and poetry recitals.
According to the authorities, from January 1 to July 1 2018 a hundred art flash mob activities will be held, in places such as Gulangyu Piano pier plaza and the People's stadium, which will provide culture and art for locals as well as tourists. 

XM high school student admitted to Harvard

According to news released on the official website of No. 6 High School of Xiamen, Hu Wenxin, a grade 12 student, has been admitted to Harvard University. This year, about a dozen high school students from the mainland were directly accepted by Harvard. Students from Xiamen have previously been admitted to Harvard, but generally they were at master's degree or undergraduate level. 
The acceptance rate of the eight best-known universities in the United States, including Harvard, continued to decline this year, and Harvard even reached its historic low point with an admittance rate of just 4.5%, that is, from a total of 42,749 people applying, only 1,962 were admitted.


Work continues on new beach park at Maluan Bay

City officials recently announced that work continues on a new beachside park alongside Haicang's Maluan Bay. The 200,000-square-meter park is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Extending from the Xinyang Bridge to Ma Er Qiao, the park will be approximately two kilometers long. Soil backfill is mostly complete for the project, with ground formation currently underway.
Construction to begin in June on expansion of SM Mall

SM三期将于6月开工建设
City officials announced last week the approval of plans to begin construction in June of the third phase of the SM Mall. Scheduled for completion in 2021, the 900-million-yuan facility will include an 18-story hotel and a four-story commercial building. The new site will cover more than 33,000 square meters of land.

Xiamen Sea-Fishing off Season begins on May 1

Fujian Province's schedule for the 2018 Annual Fishing off Season in Summer has been released recently, and will run from May 1 to August 16. During this period, illegal fishing vessels will be excluded from fishing subsidies. According to past experience, the overall price of aquatic products will increase by about 20%. However, since about 80% of the aquatic products in Xiamen are transported from elsewhere, the availability of chilled aquatic products and farmed fish will remain uninterrupted during the off season.
