The Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation is looking for a Research Assistant to work with the China Philanthropy Project on its end-to-end pipeline for researching, verifying, and analyzing donation data. This exciting opportunity will involve working with faculty and researchers to compile a database of top Chinese philanthropists and recipient organizations in China, which seeks to quantify indices related to generosity, diversity, and innovation in this emerging sector. This work will link to the Ash Center’s innovation activities and the China Programs. Applicants should have a strong interest in philanthropy and the ability to carry out extensive research and investigation into publicly available information such as philanthropic foundations’ annual reports.
Ideal applicants should have a strong research background as well as an interest in the development of philanthropy in China. Successful candidates should be able to accomplish the following five tasks
(1) Find articles about donations on Google/Baidu and enter the relevant information into our database; 
(2) Research the annual reports and websites of Chinese philanthropic foundations for donation data; 
(3) Email and call Chinese donors and recipients to verify data; 
(4) Work with a small team to analyze the dataset and compute summary statistics; and 
(5) Provide input on the design of our website.
Qualifications:
- Fluent in written and spoken Mandarin Chinese.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets.
- Ability to create data visualizations as .svg images or using D3.js is a plus, but not required.
- Ability to work within a team under time constraints and meet deadlines.
- Must be available to work regularly from the Ash Center office in Cambridge, MA for the duration of the position.
- Must be able to work up to 35 hours per week during the summer starting as soon as possible and preferably 17.25 hours per week during the fall. Pay is $20 per hour.
