Lianyue Tunnel opened to traffic last Sunday. 
The new tunnels will reduce to under five minutes the drive time between Siming's Lianyue Road junction and Huli's Huarong Road junction.
New penalties set for littering and 
for not recycling

City officials recently announced a new set of penalties and fines designed as a part of the city's beautification and recycling program.
The new program includes fines of 200 yuan to 1,000 yuan for littering. Apartment complexes that fail to provide adequate garbage facilities face fines of 10,000 yuan to 50,000 yuan.
The city's imminent recycling program includes a tiered system of penalties for households that fail to sort their garbage. Initial penalties begin with a warning and escalate to fines of up to 1,000 yuan. Apartment complexes face similar penalties, with fines ranging from 10,000 yuan to 50,000 yuan for failing to sort garbage.
The city will also organize a database for littering and recycling offenses. Repeat offenders may face further criminal penalties and their employers may be notified.
Fees eliminated for 
Jimei Turtle Garden

Local officials announced recently that there will be no admission fee for Jimei Turtle Garden as of next month, eliminating the current 30 yuan ticket price.

The 180,000-square-meter Turtle Garden includes the former residence of Tan Kah Kee as well as a memorial and park in his honor. The facility is classified as a 4A national tourism site. It is regarded by provincial figures as an important site for its national and historical significance.
Fares hiked for Xiamen-Fuzhou train tickets

Regional Railway officials recently announced new fares for high-speed rail tickets from April 21. The new rates lift second class tickets between Fuzhou and Xiamen by 13 yuan to 93.5 yuan, with first-class tickets jumping by 47 yuan to 144.5 yuan.
Xiamen to hold inaugural water 
sports festival

Wuyuan Bay will host on April 22 the Cross-Strait (Xiamen) Canoe Race and the Xiamen Water Sports Carnival. The two-day event will feature Chinese mainland and Taiwan athletes. Competitors can register through April 10 at the Jiuzhouxing Sea Sports Theme Club in the Wuyuan Bay Cultural Exhibition Center.

Registered XM population 
grows by 94,000

Xiamen's registered resident population hit 2.2 million in 2016, up by 94,000 residents year-on-year. 
The city's total permanent resident population reached 3.92 million, up by 60,000 residents. Inhabitants on the island of Xiamen accounted for 56.3 percent of locally registered residents, down by four percentage points. Trends include a growing number of urban residents and a surging population in Xiamen's mainland districts.
XM urban resident income 
jumps 8.6%
厦门城镇居民人均可支配收入增长8.6%

Government officials announced last week that urban per capita disposable income in Xiamen topped 46,254 yuan in 2016, rising 8.6 percent year-on-year. The urban per capita consumption expenditure reached 30,866 yuan, a yearly rise of 6.7 percent.
XM plans new coastal 
sightseeing platform

The coastal renovation project spanning the distance from Haicang Bay to Haicang Bridge will include a new sightseeing platform, according to Jianguo Sun, the deputy director general of the city's Oceans and Fisheries Bureau. When completed at the end of the year, the 11-kilometer coastline project will increase the city's total wetland area to 534,000 square meters.
Construction wrapped up last year on the initial portion of the project, according to Huangwei Lin, the project department director of the Oceans and Fisheries Bureau. Now open to the public, further planned upgrades include a public square and more than 200,000 square meters of  new mangrove stands, with plantings scheduled for this summer. The entire project is slated for completion in July.
